Women's Water Polo Sweeps CWPA Weekly Awards

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - George Washington women’s water polo swept the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s weekly awards for its performance at last weekend’s Bison Invitational, highlighted by Player of the Week honors for freshman Alana Ponce.

Jacqueline Bywater was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Dara Bleiberg earned a share of the Rookie of the Week award, along with Ponce and Marialena Seletopoulou of Saint Francis (Pa.).

Ponce made a splash in her debut weekend in Buff and Blue, totaling 14 goals, seven assists and eight steals to help the Colonials win three of four games at the season-opening tournament hosted by Bucknell. The Gig Harbor, Wash., native was at her best in a 16-10 win over Gannon when she tied a program record by scoring eight goals.

Bywater nabbed a team-high 12 steals over the four games, including five in the the victory over Gannon. The senior from California also added six goals and five assists for the weekend. It’s her first time winning the conference’s defensive award. She was honored as Player of the Week twice in 2015 and twice again last season.

Bleiberg started her GW career by posting eight goals, eight assists and six steals. The California native's top performance came in Sunday's finale when she posted four goals, four assists and three steals in a win over Saint Francis (Pa.).

Bleiberg and Ponce are the first Colonials to be named CWPA Rookie of the Week since Bywater and Scarlett Hallahan were honored a combined six times in 2015.

 

 

GW is back in action this weekend with four games at the Princeton Invitational, starting Friday at 6:45 p.m. against Iona.
