GW Women's Water Polo Falls Twice at Bucknell Invite
Colonials Face No. 13 UC San Diego on Sunday Morning
Feb. 15, 2014
LEWISBURG, Pa. - The George Washington women's water polo team dropped a pair of games on Saturday on the second day of the Bucknell Invitational, falling to No. 20 Hartwick, 15-6, and to Marist, 9-5, at Kinney Natatorium.
Hartwick scored the first four goals of the first game before senior Megan Brolley put the Colonials (2-5) on the board with 1:56 to go in the first quarter. The Hawks led, 4-1, after one and extended their lead to 7-1 with the first two goals of the second, but senior Erin Dickson and sophomore Caroline Sandri tallied back-to-back markers to make it 7-3 at the 3:42 mark. Hartwick led, 9-3, at halftime.
The Hawks again scored three straight to start the third period and open a 10-3 advantage until senior Rachael Bentley interrupted the run with 1:40 left, but Hartwick scored with eight seconds left in the quarter to take an 11-4 lead after three. Each team then scored twice in the fourth for the 15-6 final score, with Brolley and classmate Katherine Berry accounting for GW's tallies. Sophomore goalkeeper Caterina Sesana recorded a career-high 12 saves in the contest.
The second game was a lower-scoring affair. With the game tied, 1-1, following a goal by Sandri with 2:21 to play in the first, Marist rattled off four straight goals spanning three quarters to take a 5-1 lead 31 seconds into the third.
Sophomore Hannah Cox and Berry tallied back-to-back goals to end the third period and pull GW within two, 5-3, with eight minutes to go, but the Red Foxes outscored the Colonials, 4-2, in the fourth for the 9-5 win.
Five different Colonials - Bentley, Berry, Brolley, Cox and Sandri - accounted for GW's five goals in the game, and junior Chandler Vilander had six saves in the cage.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday when they face their third ranked opponent of the weekend in No. 13 UC San Diego at 8 a.m. on the final day of the Bucknell Invitational.
