GW's Bentley, Donoghue Take Home CWPA Southern Division Weekly Honors
Bentley Named Player of the Week; Donoghue Tabbed Top Rookie
Feb. 20, 2013
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - George Washington junior Rachael Bentley was named Southern Division Player of the Week, and freshman Erin Donoghue was tabbed Co-Rookie of the Week for games played Feb. 11-17, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announced on Wednesday.
Bentley led the Colonials to a 2-2 weekend at the Bison Invitational with a team-best 17 points on seven goals and a team-high 10 assists, adding a steal, two ejections drawn and a penalty drawn. The Riverside, Calif., native scored at least one goal in all four games, including six points against both Hartwick (3g, 3a) and Villanova (1g, 5a). In addition, she tallied four points on two goals and two assists against Marist.
Through seven games this season, Bentley leads GW with 31 points and 17 assists and is second on the team with 14 goals.
The award marks the third CWPA weekly honor and second Player of the Week nod of Bentley's career, as she was named Player of the Week in March 2012 after earning one Rookie of the Week accolade as a freshman in 2011.
Donoghue led GW with nine goals and seven steals while adding an assist and two ejections drawn at the Bison Invitational. Three of her goals came in man-up situations and one was scored off a penalty shot.
Donoghue tallied a career-high five goals in GW's 10-9 win over host Bucknell, including four in a dominant second period which proved to be the difference in the game, and she added two steals against the Bison. The Walnut Creek, Calif., native also tallied four points on three goals and an assist to go with two steals in GW's win over Villanova, and while she did not score against Hartwick, she picked up a team- and career-best three steals.
For the season, Donoghue leads the Colonials with 15 goals, including a team-best eight man-up tallies, and she ranks second on the team with 17 points.
Donoghue shares the Rookie of the Week award with Bucknell's Hannah Sunday and is the first Colonials' player to earn the accolade since teammate Meagan Moreland on Feb. 13, 2012.
GW (3-4) heads to Villanova, Pa., this weekend for the CWPA/MAAC Crossover. The Colonials will face host Villanova and Siena on Saturday and Wagner and Iona on Sunday.
