GW Women's Water Polo Splits on First Day of CWPA/MAAC Crossover
Bentley Matches Record With Six Assists Against Villanova
Feb. 22, 2014
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Senior Rachael Bentley matched a school record with six assists as the George Washington women's water polo team defeated Villanova, 12-8, on Saturday afternoon on the first day of the CWPA/MAAC Crossover at Harvard's Blodgett Pool. Earlier in the day, the Colonials fell to Iona, 11-6.
Bentley tallied a program-record six assists for the third time in her career and is the sixth Colonial ever to achieve the mark. She added a goal to give her seven points, equaling the second-highest single-game total in program history, as well - a mark she has also accomplished once before.
A back-and-forth first half led to a tie game at halftime, 5-5. The see-saw continued into the third quarter, but the Colonials took a 9-8 lead after 24 minutes and shut out the Wildcats in the fourth while scoring three times for the 12-8 final.
Seniors Megan Brolley, Katherine Berry and Allison Littlejohn each scored three goals in the game, while sophomore Hannah Cox scored twice. Littlejohn added three steals, and junior goalie Chandler Vilander and eight saves.
In the day's first game, Iona scored the first two goals before GW (3-7) responded with three in a row to take a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. The game was tied, 4-4, at halftime, but the Gaels outscored the Colonials, 5-1, in the third period to take a commanding 9-5 lead and went on to win the game, 11-6.
Cox led GW with two goals, while Bentley, Brolley, senior Erin Dickson and freshman Brenna Marczewski each had one. Brolley and Littlejohn drew three ejections apiece and Vilander recorded 10 saves in the cage.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday when they face Siena at 9:15 a.m. and Wagner at 1 p.m. on the final day of the CWPA/MAAC Crossover.
