Feb. 27, 2013
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - George Washington sophomore Chandler Vilander was named Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman Hannah Cox was tabbed Rookie of the Week for games played Feb. 18-24, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announced on Wednesday.
Vilander recorded 22 saves against 26 goals allowed over 11 quarters at the CWPA/MAAC Crossover, posting a 9.45 goals-against average and a .458 save percentage to lead GW to a 3-1 weekend. The sophomore from Santa Barbara, Calif., stopped eight shots against Wagner to open the tournament, then recorded seven saves while allowing just one goal in the first three quarters of the Colonials' 11-7 win over Siena. Vilander concluded the tournament with another seven saves as GW defeated Iona, 13-10.
The award is the first weekly honor of Vilander's career, and she is the first Colonials' player to claim Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week honors since goalie Charlotte Schou on March 28, 2011.
Cox put together an outstanding weekend at the CWPA/MAAC Crossover, leading GW with 18 goals, six steals and seven ejections drawn, and added a penalty drawn and a pair of field blocks. Her 18 goals came on 32 shots for a .563 shooting percentage in the four games.
The rookie from Surrey, British Columbia, scored four goals against Wagner to open the tournament, then tallied a career-high five and added two steals in GW's 23-18 win over Villanova. Cox again scored four goals in the Colonials' 11-7 win over Siena on Sunday before closing out the weekend in style with another five goals to go with three steals, five ejections drawn and a penalty drawn in a 13-10 win over Iona.
Cox leads GW with 26 goals on the season and ranks second on the team with 26 points and 13 ejections drawn. She is the second Colonials' player to earn Rookie of the Week accolades in as many weeks, joining classmate Erin Donoghue, who garnered the honor last week.
GW (6-5) heads to Erie, Pa., to take on Southern Division rivals Brown, Bucknell and host Mercyhurst this weekend.
