March 20, 2013

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - George Washington junior Rachael Bentley was named Southern Division Co-Player of the Week, and freshman Hannah Cox was tabbed Rookie of the Week for games played March 11-17, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announced on Wednesday.

Bentley led GW in nearly every statistical category during its seven-game West Coast swing, tallying 29 points on 15 goals and 14 assists while adding 10 steals and nine ejections drawn. Her 15 goals came on 27 shots, good for a .556 shooting percentage, and six of her 15 goals came in man-up situations.

Bentley's best game of the week came against Iona, when she set a school record with 11 points in the contest. She scored a career-high seven goals on nine shots and added four assists, three steals and two ejections drawn against the Gaels. The seven goals equaled the second-highest single-game total in school history, last accomplished in 2004.

Bentley, who had at least three points in six of GW's seven games, opened the Colonials' Spring Break trip with seven points on three goals and four assists in a 14-9 win at Whittier, adding a steal and two ejections drawn. She was a perfect 3-for-3 shooting, and two of her goals came on power plays. She followed that with a goal and four assists in an 11-7 win over St. Francis (N.Y.).

With 29 points on the week, Bentley had a hand in 42 percent of GW's 69 goals. For the season, the junior from Riverside, Calif., leads the Colonials with 46 assists and 79 points and ranks second with 33 goals. Her 46 assists are the second-highest single-season total in program history, just four behind her own mark of 50, which she set last season.

The award marks the second Player of the Week nod this season for Bentley, as she also earned the honor on Feb. 20, and it is the third of her career, making her just the third Colonial ever to win it at least three times, joining Marissa Stamler (3) and Allison Peotter (6). It is the third time this season a Colonial was been named Player of the Week, as Cox received the distinction on March 6. Bentley shares this week's award with Harvard's Shayna Price.

Cox scored 16 points on 12 goals and four assists while adding four steals and eight ejections drawn in seven games in California. Seven of her 12 goals came in extra-man situations.

Cox notched hat tricks in the Colonials' wins over St. Francis (N.Y.) and La Verne. All three of her goals against the Terriers came on power plays, and she added an assist for four points in the game as well as an ejection drawn. Cox recorded three steals to go with two goals against Cal Lutheran, and she had four points on two goals and two assists while drawing one ejection and one penalty against Iona. She also had three ejections drawn against Redlands.

For the season, the freshman from Surrey, British Columbia, leads the Colonials with 51 goals and 28 ejections drawn and ranks second with 55 points. The 51 goals are tied for the fifth-most in a single season in program history.

It is the third time this season that Cox has been named the league's top rookie, just the second time in program history a Colonial has been received three Rookie of the Week awards and first since Peotter in 2009. Cox also garnered the honor in back-to-back weeks on Feb. 27 and March 6.

In all, Colonial freshmen have been named Rookie of the Week a school-record four times this season, as Erin Donoghue earned the award on Feb. 20.

GW (11-11) hosts Villanova on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
