Women's Water Polo Places Six on AWPCA All-Academic Team

June 18, 2004

WASHINGTON, DC - Six members of the George Washington University women's water polo team were named to the American Water Polo Coaches Association (AWPCA) All-Academic Teams for their outstanding work in the classroom, the organization announced today. The Colonials, with a 3.34 team grade-point average, were one of 32 teams nationwide recognized for the AWPCA Team Honor.

All-Academic honors were awarded based on three levels: Excellent (3.20-3.40), Superior (3.41-3.70), and Outstanding (3.71-4.0).

Freshman Jenna Burnett (Lake Forest, CA/El Toro), an international affairs major with a 3.63 GPA, senior Elisabeth Schweitzer (Winter Park, FL/Univ. of Hawaii), a criminal justice major with a 3.51 GPA, sophomore Amy Heineman (N. Miami Beach, FL/Krop), an environmental science major with a 3.49 GPA and junior Taraneh Bastani (San Diego, CA/West Hills), an international affairs major with a 3.41 GPA all were named to the AWPCA All-Academic Superior Team.

Senior Kira Canon (Easthampton, MA/Williston), an art history and fine arts major with a 3.27 GPA and junior Kendra Shanley (Huntington Beach, CA/Marina), a biology major with a 3.25 GPA earned spots on the AWPCA All-Academic Excellent Team.

The Colonials posted a 17-13 record in 2004.
