Eight Women's Water Polo Players Named to ACWPC All-Academic Team

June 26, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's water polo team placed eight players on the 2009 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic Team and tied for the 12th-best team grade-point average of the 30 teams included on the annual list.

GW's team grade-point average of 3.11 was the highest of any CWPA Southern Division program on the ACWPC list, ahead of rivals Princeton (3.08) and Bucknell (3.00).

Junior Marissa Stamler earned All-Academic Team distinction for the third consecutive year and outstanding status for the second straight year with a grade-point average between 3.71 and 4.0.

Sophomore Erin Delker appeared on the Scholar-Athlete Team's superior squad with a GPA between 3.41 and 3.7.

Senior Luciana Maggiolo, juniors Bernadette Karandy and Tara Sullivan, sophomore Charlotte Schou and freshmen Allison Peotter and Megan Walker all earned excellent distinction with GPAs between 3.2 and 3.4. It marks Karandy and Maggiolo's second selection to the ACWPC Scholar-Athlete Team.

All eight student-athletes were previously honored on the CWPA Scholar-Athlete Team on June 18.

Athletes were nominated by their coach/sports information director and were active participants on the team and a full-time student at the institution which nominated them. Further, each student-athlete achieved a 3.2 cumulative Grade Point Average or higher based on the most recent grades posted through the spring semester of the 2008-09 academic year.

GW (6-21) knocked off Bucknell in the consolation game of the CWPA Southern Division Championship to place third at the event, its highest finish since 2005.
