Ashley Campbell Named GW Assistant Cross Country Coach
Sept. 12, 2011
WASHINGTON- Ashley Campbell has been named assistant coach for the George Washington University cross country program. Campbell comes to GW following an impressive undergraduate career as a member of the University of Maryland cross country team.
"I am very excited to have Ashley join the cross country program here at George Washington" said Head Coach Terry Weir. "I was fortunate enough to coach her during her collegiate career and am confident that she will bring the same enthusiasm and commitment she possessed as an undergraduate to our student-athletes at GW."
Campbell, a 2011 graduate of the University of Maryland with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology, served as captain of the Terrapins' cross country team from 2008-11. She concluded her career with a 56th-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, following a 47th-place finish at the event in 2009. Among her career highlights are a fifth-place finish at the UMES Lid-Lifter (2009) and ninth-place finishes at both the Wolfpack Invitational and the Great American Festival in 2009.
"It is an honor to join the George Washington University athletic department and coach Weir's staff", said Campbell. "After running for Coach Weir at Maryland, I have a great understanding of his coaching philosophy and have a clear idea what he wants to build here at GW. I can't wait to get started."
Campbell also excelled in the classroom at Maryland, as she was recognized on the Atlantic Coast Conference Honor Roll (2008-11) and Dean's list (2007-10). Additionally, she was a UMD Scholar-Athlete from 2007-11 and served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) from 2009-11.
A native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Campbell was a member of consecutive New York State Championship teams in 2004 and 2005 as a stand-out harrier at Saratoga Springs High School. She also led the team to the Nike Team National Championship in 2004 and followed that performance with a second-place finish in 2005.
The George Washington cross country programs will compete at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., on Saturday at 11:00 am.
