Harrison Cohen strikes out five in five innings
EDINBURG, TX - George Washington baseball took the field on Friday to open the 2022 campaign, but GW will have to wait one more day to try to get its first win of the season. The Colonials' offense was held in check all night by UTRGV's pitching, while the Vaqueros took advantage of a pair of errors to take a 3-0 win on Opening Day.
Friday began as a back-and-forth pitchers duel, with both GW's and UTRGV's starters putting up zeros through the first four innings. WAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Kevin Stevens lived up to his billing, striking out a career-high 13 and allowing just one hit over six innings, while Harrison Cohen retired 10 out of the first 11 batters he faced. Unfortunately for Cohen, a costly error on a throw to first in the 5th inning allowed Vaqueros second baseman Deandre Shelton to advance to second. Shelton would eventually score on a triple by Brett Cain, and UTRGV never looked back.
Offensively, even after Stevens left the mound for UTRGV, the Colonials were unable to wake the bats up. Cade Fergus was GW's lone baserunner on Friday evening, tallying a hit to left in the fifth.
The Colonials will try again tomorrow in game two of the series. Connor Harris will get the ball for GW. First pitch from Texas is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (EST).
