Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Hofstra

Colonials' staff holds Hofstra to four runs in 23 innings on Sunday
Coming into Sunday, GW baseball's offense was red hot, having scored 32 runs in its last three home games. On Sunday, it was the pitching staff that took center stage and stymied the Pride offense for the majority of 23 innings of baseball. Unfortunately, Hofstra's pitchers were equal to the task in the visitors' sweep of the Buff and Blue.
GAME 1: Hofstra 2, GW 0
For the second straight game, a GW starting pitcher put together a sensational outing, as Connor Harris dominated during the first three innings. The right-hander retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced, including eight straight to start the game. However, in the fourth inning, back-to-back singles set Hofstra up with runners in scoring position and one out. Harris was able to get the second out of the inning, but a wild pitch allowed Hofstra to score both its runs.
A 2-0 lead is all that Pride pitcher Brad Camarda would need, as he cruised through the GW lineup. Camarda allowed just five hits across seven shutout innings, while striking out seven Colonials.
In the eighth, GW was able to bring the winning run to the plate. Following an Eddie Micheletti Jr. walk, and a single by Michael Ludowig, Cade Fergus stepped into the batter's box. While Fergus made hard contact, he hit a liner directly at Hofstra second baseman Santino Rosso, who doubled off DiTomaso at second and ended GW's rally.
Despite pitching into the ninth inning, Harris picked up the loss in game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader. Camarda picked up the victory for Hofstra, and Michael O'Hanlon recorded the save.
GAME 2: Hofstra 2, GW 1 (14 innings)
In the second game of Sunday's twin bill, GW's offense struck early against the Pride. Logan Leax reached on a lead-off walk in the first, and later scored on an RBI single by Eddie Micheletti Jr. to put the Colonials up 1-0.
That run would be GW's only run of the day against Hofstra, as the Pride's pitchers shut down GW over the next 13 innings at the Tuck.
Hofstra starter Tristan Nemjo went five innings and allowed just three hits while striking out four. Meanwhile, the Pride's bullpen went nine scoreless and allowed just two hits while striking out 11.
Despite the loss, GW received more impressive pitching in game 2. Starter Justin Solt went seven innings and struck out 8, while Trevor Kuncl put together a tantalizing performance in extra innings. The Colonials' closer powered through five strong innings, while striking out seven.

George Washington will continue its homestand this week, when it welcomes UMBC and UMES to the Tuck on Tuesday and Wednesday. First pitch for Tuesday's contest against the Retrievers is slated for 3:00 p.m.
