DiTomaso extends hitting streak in effort
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - George Washington baseball got off to a strong start on Saturday, but the Colonials were done in by five errors, and ultimately fell to ETSU, 9-4.
The Colonials' offense came out with a fire and it paid off early as they plated three runs in the second inning. Derek Ripp drove home a pair of runs with an RBI double, before coming home two batters later after an RBI double by Cade Fergus. The Buff & Blue would tack on another run in the fourth inning thanks to a fielder's choice by Noah Levin, and entered the bottom half of the frame up, 4-1.
The bottom of the fourth proved to be the turning point of Saturday's contest. ETSU loaded the bases to start the inning thanks to a base hit and two errors by the Colonials' infield. Bucs leadoff hitter Ashton King would make the Buff & Blue pay by lacing an RBI double to centerfield and tying the game at four.
Two innings later, ETSU took its first lead of the afternoon with another RBI double, before putting the game out of reach with three runs in the eighth inning.
Despite the loss, GW's offense continued to be productive. Steve DiTomaso extended his hitting streak to seven games, while Cade Fergus turned in his third multi-hit effort in the last five games after finishing the afternoon 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
GW will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon when it faces the Bucs in the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
