Colonials score in each of final four innings to pocket win

RICHMOND, Va. - In a game that featured four lead changes, George Washington baseball found a way to stand tall at the end. The Colonials rode 13 hits to a 7-6 comeback victory and series win over Richmond.

Sunday's game had plenty of offense, as the two teams scored in seven out of the nine innings. For the first time in the series, it was the Spiders' offense that struck first. UR scored on an RBI double in the second to take a 1-0 lead. GW would tie the game up at 1 in the third, but Richmond jumped ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the frame. The teams would trade runs again in the fourth, but Richmond still led 4-3 going into the middle innings.

In the sixth inning, the Buff & Blue offense finally found a way to take control of the game. Noah Levin drove in a run with a sac-fly to tie the game at 4. One inning later, the Colonials took the lead for good with an RBI groundout by Jon Bruno. In the eighth and ninth, GW padded its lead thanks to a pair of screaming RBI doubles by Steve DiTomaso and Cade Fergus.

The insurance proved valuable, as Richmond brought the game winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. While the Spiders were able to pocket a pair of runs to make it a 7-6 game, Trevor Kuncl got Jason Neff to fly out to end the contest.

Offensively, eight of GW's nine batters were able to pick up a hit. Cade Fergus led the way with a monster 4-for-6 afternoon that included two doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored. Ty Acker also reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with two walks.

On the mound, Justin Solt grinded through six innings, setting down seven Spiders on strikes and keeping GW within striking distance. Additionally, Rich Pfluger had a scoreless outing and Trevor Kuncl allowed just two runs over 1.2 innings for the save.

Up next, George Washington will face crosstown rival Georgetown on Tuesday. The two sides will play at the Nats Youth Academy in southeast Washington, D.C. First pitch is expected at 6 p.m.
