Three Colonials record two RBIs on Saturday
The Colonials' offense began the game by jumping on Patriots' starter Ben Shields. GW tagged Shields for five runs on four hits and three walks in the opening stanza, with the big knock being a two-run single by Ty Acker. The Buff & Blue's early success helped to knock Shields out of the game after just one third of an inning.
However, Mason responded with its own offensive attack in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs on four hits to make it a 5-3 game. When GW starter Connor Harris found himself in early trouble, Justin Solt picked up his teammate by coming in in relief with the bases loaded, and struck out a pair of Patriots to end the threat.
The two sides would play a scoreless second, but Mason's offense struck again in the bottom of the third with a bases loaded walk and two-run single to pull ahead 6-5.
The Colonials would tie the game up on a Derek Ripp triple in the top of the fourth, but the Patriots quickly retook the lead with two more runs in the bottom of the frame.
In the eighth, GW cut the lead back down to 8-7 after Ty Acker laced his second RBI single of the day to left. One batter later and with the tying run on second, Cade Fergus ripped a double to right field. Unfortunately, an accurate throw by Brett Ahalt beat Acker to the plate, ending the GW rally.
Offensively on Saturday, Acker, Noah Levin, and Logan Leax each drove in two, while Mike Ludowig tallied three base hits. Meanwhile on the mound, Trevor Kuncl helped keep the Buff & Blue close throughout the game with 4.2 scoreless innings in relief.
George Washington will now look to avoid the sweep on Sunday in the series finale. First pitch from Fairfax is scheduled for 1 p.m.
