Cano and Fales combine for first shutout this year

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Behind early first- and second-inning runs and lockdown pitching, GW softball shut out Delaware, 3-0, in the final game of the Carolina Classic. The Buff and Blue end the weekend with a 2-2 mark and move to 4-3 overall.

The top of the lineup got the job done today and got it done early. GW, playing as the home side, scored twice in the bottom of the first and once more in the bottom of the second. The early runs were backed by quality pitching and defense and were enough to bring GW to the finish line.

In the bottom of the first with runners on first and second, Ashley Corpuz, who was batting in the clean-up role, drove in the first run with a double down the left-field line. Reese Torres then doubled GW's lead in the next at-bat with a sac fly into right field, scoring Mia Parker.

The Colonials got back to the top of order in the second inning and put together a two-out run-scoring rally. After a single from leadoff batter Arizona Ritchie and a walk from Rose Cano, Parker clutched up and hit a double into left center, scoring what would be the final run of the game.

Pitching brought the game home from there. GW limited Delaware to five hits at the plate and earned its first shutout win of the season. Cano started the game and went 4.1 innings, allowing only three hits. Emma Fales took over for the final 2.2 innings and kept the Blue Hens quiet.

Cano earned her fourth win in five starts, while Fales was credited with her first save of the season.

The Buff and Blue will look ahead to next weekend when they play five games at the Cavalier Clash, hosted by UVA. GW will open up play with two games on Friday, against St. John's (10 a.m.) and Longwood (12:30 p.m.).
