Cano earns ninth win of the season
WASHINGTON - On another breezy day on The Vern, GW softball found ways to replicate last week's success as it took down Morgan State, 6-2, on Wednesday afternoon. The Colonials move to 9-7 on the season and remain a perfect 3-0 at home.
Rose Cano was dealing again today and did so in the face of adversity. Morgan State hopped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the first-year wasn't phased. Those two runs would be the only runs allowed by Cano all afternoon as she earned her ninth win of the season and sixth complete game.
While Cano and the Colonials' defense were able to silence the Bears after the first inning, the Buff and Blue batters turned up in the third inning and scored in each of the remaining innings.
Two of GW's most feared bats converted in the third inning which tied the game. Arizona Ritchie broke into the score column with a two-out triple, and was later driven in by an Ashley Corpuz double into right field.
In the fourth, GW doubled its score and took its first lead of the day with one swing of the bat from Alena Ramirez. Ramirez doubled into left field which brought in Abby Schaub and Sidney Torres.
GW bolstered its lead in the fifth and sixth innings, adding one run in each inning, leaving Cano to finish off the Bears and her complete game.
Ramirez finished with a game-high three RBI - two of which came on her fourth-inning double, and the last came on a ground-out RBI in the sixth.
GW will now look ahead to the start of conference play with a weekend visit from the Rams of Rhode Island. First pitch on the GW Softball Field is set for noon on Saturday.Â
