Buff and Blue will look ahead to weekend series at Loyola Chicago
FAIRFAX, Va. - GW softball fell in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader against George Mason at the George Mason Softball Complex.
GW 1, GMU 7
An early multi-run deficit proved costly for GW as it only scored one run off Patriots' ace Aly Rayle and fell, 7-1.Â
An early bases-loaded opportunity for George Mason resulted in three runs for the Patriots in the opening frame.Â
GW managed to get runners aboard in each of the first three innings, but couldn't string together enough hits to drive any home.Â
After holding GW scoreless through the first three innings, the Patriots picked up another two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to seven.
GW cracked through in the fifth inning as Daniella Lew reached on an error that brought home Daniella Wilson, but it was too little too late as GMU walked away with the game-one victory.Â
Rayle went the distance for the home side and picked up the win on one run and five hits while striking out eight.Â
GW 2, GMU 5
The long ball was the difference maker in game two as GMU scored four of its five runs on home runs. Despite holding leads at two different points in the ballgame, GW fell, 5-2.
The Colonials jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. Leadoff batter Arizona Ritchie reached on a single and stole second before cleanup hitter Reese Torres crushed a double down the right-field line and brought home Ritchie.Â
The lead lasted until the second inning when Patriots' first baseman Maddy Myers leveled things up with a solo shot over the left-field fence.Â
Gabby Polsky led off the fourth inning for GW by reaching on an infield single, later coming around to score on an RBI single from Lew, her second RBI of the day.Â
Mason leveled the game once again in the bottom of the fourth inning on a double into right-center, which left both teams searching for the advantage heading into the fifth.Â
Neither side had success at the plate in the fifth, but in the sixth, it was the Patriots who found the eventual game-winner, a three-run home run over the left-field fence.Â
Ritchie reached base a game-high three times for GW while Polsky had a game-high two hits.Â
