Coach Schoonmaker reaches 50th win at GW

BALTIMORE - GW softball completed the season sweep of Morgan State on Wednesday, winning 2-1 in the second and final meeting with the Lady Bears. With the win, head coach Chrissy Schoonmaker picked up her 50th victory as the Head Coach of GW softball.

Rose Cano went the distance for the 13th time this season. The first-year out of Long Beach, Calif., picked up her 12th win of the season, giving up one run on five hits with three strikeouts. Cano is now four wins away from tying the GW rookie pitching wins record (16).

With just one out in the second inning, the Lady Bears loaded the bases and looked to get their offense rolling early. Cano, facing a squad that put up 17 runs in its last outing, was able to limit the damage to just one, which ended up being the difference.

Arizona Ritchie and Ashley Corpuz powered the lineup today with one RBI apiece in the third inning. Daniella Lew got the third going with her first career triple and turned over the lineup to Ritchie, who converted on an RBI single to tie the game. Corpuz then delivered the game-winner two batters later with a single up the middle that brought home Ritchie from second.

GW held a 6-5 advantage in the hit column and swiped two bases on Morgan State. Morgan State attempted four steals, two of which were busted by first-year catcher Reese Torres.

The Buff and Blue return to Foggy Bottom for an A-10 series against the Bonnies this weekend. GW hosts alumnae of the program for Alumnae Day on Saturday, before honoring the program's seniors on Sunday's Senior Day. First pitch on Saturday is set for 12 p.m., and all three games against St. Bonaventure will be streamed on ESPN platforms.
