Corpuz hits walk-off home run versus Howard
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - A pair of first-years from California and a grad student from Virginia continue to steal the headlines for GW softball this season, and in the first game of two for the Buff and Blue today in Charlottesville, that was the script once again. Ashley Corpuz from Ladera Ranch, Calif., provided the final blow with a walk-off, two-run blast to plate fellow first-year from Long Beach, Calif., Rose Cano, to break a 5-5 tie and walk-off as 7-5 victors against Howard.Â
Before Corpuz stepped to the plate to win it, it was the Stafford, Va., native, Arizona Ritchie - whose father Gregg coached GW baseball to a doubleheader split today as well - who continued to absolutely torment opposing pitchers and defenses in her grad year at George Washington. Down two in the bottom of the 7th, Ritchie socked one into the right field corner, and legged out an inside-the-park homer, coming around to score behind pinch runner Daniella Wilson.Â
While not featuring her best stuff in the circle, Cano bent but didn't break in the complete game effort to give her offense, and herself, time to battle back after falling behind 5-3 when Howard took the lead in the top of the 7th. In improving to 6-2 on the year, and getting credited with the win in all six GDUB victories in 2023, Cano was reached for five runs, with four of them earned, on 10 hits. She made the Bison earn it though as she K'd four without giving up a free pass, to once again get it done in all phases of the game.Â
Abby Schaub and Mia Parker both collected two hits for GW, with both of Parker's being two-baggers, and she also scored once and drove in another.
The second game of GW's day was a different tale altogether as the visitors were stymied in the run-rule defeat to the homestanding Cavaliers of Virginia. George Washington mustered just two hits, one each from Cano and Schaub, in falling 16-1.
Up next for GW is a four-game-in-two-days trip to Hampton, Va., for the Pirate-Spartan Classic next weekend. The club plays a double-dip Saturday vs. Hampton and Penn State starting at 10 a.m., followed by another doubleheader Sunday at 10 a.m. against Delaware and Norfolk State.Â
